The Dinner Before the Show

Part One: Choosing Safely

Mira Venn and Tomas Rell entered Copper Spoon Café before an evening show at Moonbridge Theatre. Warm bread scented the small room, and spoons tapped softly against blue ceramic cups. Mira opened the menu, but the long descriptions made her pause. She had a serious nut allergy, so choosing quickly was difficult. Lio Fern, their server, placed a glass bottle on the table. “Would you like still or sparkling water?” he asked. “Sparkling water, please,” Tomas said. Mira showed Lio her silver allergy card. “Could you recommend something without nuts?” Lio checked his order notebook and pointed to the special, a roasted pepper pasta. He explained that every ingredient in its sauce was safe for her. Tomas wanted something lighter, so he ordered the vegetarian tomato soup with a side dish of green beans. Mira asked, “Could I have the cheese in a separate bowl?” Lio wrote the request carefully. As he walked toward the kitchen, Tomas looked at his theatre ticket. They had forty minutes before the doors closed, but Mira finally relaxed her grip on the menu.

Part Two: Fixing the Mistakes

A few minutes later, Lio returned with two steaming plates. The pepper sauce smelled sweet and smoky, but a thick layer of cheese covered Mira’s pasta. She did not touch it. “Excuse me,” she said, keeping her voice calm. “I asked for the cheese separately. Could you replace this, please?” Lio looked at his notebook, then at the plate. “You’re right. I apologize. I’ll bring a new one.” Because Mira spoke clearly, Lio understood the problem at once. The new roasted pepper pasta arrived without cheese, and Tomas shared his crisp green beans while she waited. After the meal, Tomas requested the bill. He heard paper slide across the wooden table and checked each line. The café had charged them for two bottles of water, so they had been overcharged. “I’m sorry, but we only had one bottle,” Tomas said. “Could you check this for us?” Lio compared the bill with his notebook and removed the extra charge. They paid, thanked him, and stood to leave. Mira placed one bright green bean across the blue ceramic cup like a tiny bridge. Tomas laughed, folded the corrected bill around the theatre ticket, and held the door while Mira stepped into the cool evening air.
