The New Office Challenge

This original workplace adventure is inspired by the television comedy The Office (US), where ordinary office objects often create funny problems.

Part One: The Wrong Welcome Box

Maya starts her new job at Bright Star Technical Support on Monday morning. The office smells of coffee and new paper. Phones ring behind the reception desk, and a printer makes a loud clicking sound. Maya holds a black bag and looks at the busy room. She is excited, but her hands move quickly around the bag strap.

Leo, the training coordinator, walks to her with a wide smile. He carries a blue folder and a small silver key. “Welcome, Maya! This is your access card, and this is your office key,” he says. Maya takes them. The smooth card is cold in her hand. “Thank you. What’s that?” she asks, pointing across the room. “That is the printer code on the white board,” Leo answers.

Leo points to two documents beside him. “These are your training documents.” Then Maya sees three forms near a computer. “Are those my forms?” she asks. “Yes, they are. Please sign the forms,” Leo says. Maya reaches for a pen, but the pen is tied to the reception desk with a short string. She pulls it, and a little bell falls over with a bright ding. Two reception workers laugh, and Maya laughs too.

A large box waits near the office door. A yellow label says MAYA, but the box makes a strange electronic beep. Leo looks at it. “That is your equipment box,” he says. Maya opens it. Inside are six computer mice, four keyboards, and no laptop. “These are a lot of mice,” Maya says. Leo picks up one mouse. “Yes, and this one does not eat cheese.” Maya smiles, but they now have a problem: Maya cannot begin her training without the correct equipment.

Part Two: Follow the Labels

Because the equipment is wrong, Leo calls technical support. A quiet voice comes from his phone: “The correct box is in Training Room B. Look for a green label.” The line suddenly crackles and stops. Leo checks his watch. New employees arrive in twenty minutes. “Can you repeat that?” Maya asks, but the call is already finished. Leo writes TRAINING ROOM B on a yellow note.

Maya and Leo walk down a long hall. Their shoes tap on the hard floor. At the first door, two visitor badges hang from a hook. “What are these?” Maya asks. “These are visitor badges,” Leo says. “Take this badge, please. We need it for the training area.” Maya puts the badge on her jacket. It is upside down, so her name looks like AYAM. Leo turns it around, and they continue.

In Training Room B, sunlight shines on four desks and eight black chairs. Two large boxes stand near Maya. Three smaller boxes sit far away, under a clock. “Are these the equipment boxes?” she asks, touching the large ones. Leo reads their red labels. “No. These are paper boxes.” Maya points across the room. “What are those?” “Those are computer boxes,” Leo says. They cross the room because the correct box must have a green label.

The first computer box contains screens and chargers. The second contains phones, keys, and a long receipt. The last box has a green label, but it is locked. Maya looks at the silver key in her hand. “Is this the office key or the box key?” Leo is not sure. Maya chooses to try it carefully. The lock opens with a soft click. Inside is a laptop, a charger, a keyboard, and one mouse. A note on top says, “Equipment for Maya Chen.”

Part Three: The Training Begins

Because Maya finds the correct laptop, she and Leo hurry back to reception. The warm laptop presses against Maya's arm, and the charger knocks gently against the box. Near the desk, a new employee named Omar is waiting. He points to several blue folders. “Are those our safety files?” he asks. Leo is carrying the box, so Maya answers, “Yes, they are. Please take those files to the training room.”

At Maya's desk, the screen shows a red message: ACCESS CODE NEEDED. Maya looks at the white board across the office. The writing is small. “What's that number?” she asks. Leo reads it, but the printer starts loudly and covers his voice. Maya does not guess. “Can you repeat that, please?” she says. Leo repeats the number slowly. Maya types it, and the red message disappears.

Next, Maya opens the blue folder. A sheet says, “Open the safety file. Take the form. Sign the form.” She can find two files, but their names are new. “Can you show me the safety file?” she asks Omar. He points to the file with an orange label. Maya then sees an unfamiliar word on the form. “Can you spell ‘documents,’ please?” Omar says each letter while Maya writes it beside the word.

The new employees enter and sit on the black chairs. Leo's phone rings, so he asks Maya to begin. She stands beside the large desk. Her badge is straight now. She holds up one form and says, “This is your training form.” She points to the files across the room. “Those are the safety files. Please take one file.” Then she lifts two access cards. “What are these?” Omar asks with a smile. “These are your access cards,” Maya answers.

Maya gives the correct objects to each person and checks the names. The room becomes quiet except for pens moving over paper. Leo returns and sees everyone working. Maya places the last signed form in the blue folder. On the desk, her access card, key, laptop, and charger form a neat row. The little reception bell rings outside, but this time Maya keeps speaking, and the new employees follow her next instruction.
